(Hanukkah and the Earliest Church – The Way)
We need to quit using the term “Jewish Feasts,” because God Himself says: “These are My feasts” (Lev. 23:2). If you worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then the feasts articulated in the Bible are for you too! Allow me to reiterate: God’s Biblical Feasts are for everyone who have a personal relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, which includes accepting Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) as your Lord and Savior. In fact, the Lord’s Biblical Feast are occasions when God’s people gather at His appointed times, at His appointed places, for the purpose of becoming betrothed (married). This is your chance to celebrate His feasts while being prepared, or to party with the world!
I revealed a couple days ago that “for approximately the first 300 years of Christ’s Church, there was no Christmas celebration whatsoever. Believers celebrated Hanukkah, just like Yeshua did (John 10:22-23).” Let’s bring more details to the table to back up this assertion.
First, regarding Hanukkah, let’s remember that December 25th (the 15th of Kislev in 168 BC) is the exact day that an idol/statue of a Greek sun god was erected upon the Temple’s Altar in Jerusalem defiling it; then beginning with the 25th of Kislev that year hogs were offered upon God’s Altar dedicated to the pagan sun god.
For the first 300 years, nothing resembling Christmas existed in the Christian Church’s ecclesiastical calendar. The Earliest Church followed the pattern establishes by the apostles. They experienced a life and power the world could not comprehend. Both Irenaeus and Tertullian omit Christmas from their list of feasts. … One reason was that the Church was entirely Jewish until salvation came to Cornelius and his house as well as the fact that Christianity began as “The Way” movement within the Jewish community. It continued to operate within a Jewish framework for several decades into the second century. During the pre-Constantine period of the Church, several major events in the life of Jesus had no corresponding festival, including His birth; because these events did not synchronize with any Biblical Festival, which is solid testimony to the Jewish character of the earliest Christian worship due to their practices being based upon God’s Word (SANTA-TIZING, p. 121-122).
Even into the fourth century, only the birth of Jesus acquired a separate festival, being fixed on December 25th. Throughout antiquity, December 25th was known as the birthday of all idolatrous sun gods. On the ancient Babylonian Calendar, the winter solstice was December 25th. Long before “Christmas” was labeled “holy” by the Roman Catholic Church in 379 AD, the heathen celebrated the birth of the son of the Babylonian Queen of Heaven at that precise time. The earliest Christians weren’t interested in Yeshua’s birthday until the fourth century when Mary the mother of Jesus was cast into an idolatrous image that looked sanctified but was, in actuality, earthly and demonic. The Roman Church put Mary in heaven, not solely as part of the Great Cloud of Witnesses, but as a queen made in the image of the Babylonian mother goddess. The same fourth century that Christmas began to be celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church was the exact same timeframe that the Babylonian infant son and his adored Babylonian Queen of Heaven mum (in the twisted facade of Jesus and Mary) began to be worshiped in a warped way too (SANTA-TIZING, p. 123).
“It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, and afterward to reconsider his vows” (Proverbs 20:25). Many Christians are still being rash devoting something as holy. If we declare something as holy (like a holy day – holiday) and when that thing that we declared to be holy is not; then it literally becomes a snare for people. As this unholy snare gets passed down generations, it becomes stronger and stronger until one who is zealous for God’s Word and His Presence makes an immovable stance. This is what is happening in our day. Devout hearts are coming back to the basics of their love relationship with the Lord, based on their own personal relationship with the Holy Three in One and their devotion to God’s Word. Scripture tells us that it’s not about what we believe (by choosing our own way or an institution’s way or man’s way that makes us pure), but what the Lord says in His Word when it comes to pure unadulterated worship.
Finally, here are some stats that will help you get your bearings in the confusion that surrounds Christmas: The phrase “Christ’s mass” (i.e., Christmas) is first found in the 11th century (1038 AD). Prior to this time Christmastime was associated with the Winter Solstice. For simplicity’s sake I use the term “Christmas,” because that is what we know it as today. “Christmas” was dubbed “holy” by the Catholic Church in 379 AD when they assimilated Mithra’s Winter Festival into the ecclesiastical calendar. The Catholic Encyclopedia tells us that Mithra’s Winter Festival (called “The Nativity” or “The Nativity of the Sun” or “The Nativity of the Unconquered Sun,” which is a celebration of a Persian pagan sun god birthday) claims strong responsibility for our December 25th date. The first recorded evidence of a supposedly “Christian” Christmas taking place on December 25th isn’t found until the time of Constantine in 336 AD when the Roman Emperor still worshipped the sun (i.e., Mithra).
So, remember, believers of The Way have a primordial stance regarding the celebration of holidays. For the first 300 years of Christ’s Church, there was no Christmas celebration whatsoever. They celebrated Hanukkah, just like Yeshua did.
Let’s return to what Yeshua and His disciples/apostles celebrated!
