2024 is not only a year to ascend in Christ, but it is a year to do it corporately. This is beautifully illustrated when we meditate upon Psalms 24 and Exodus 24 together.
Recall that Psalms 24 details the prerequisites for ascending in Christ rightly. We ascend into the hill of the LORD to stand in His holy place through having clean hands, a pure heart, not lifting up your soul to an idol – worshiping idols – and not swearing deceitfully (Psa. 24:3-4). Exodus 24 reveals 70 elders joining Moses, Aaron, and Aaron’s sons (Nadab and Abihu) to see the God of Israel after all the people answered with one voice: “All the words which the Lord has said we will do” (Exodus 24:3). Moses then rose early the next morning to build an altar to God as well as twelve pillars for the 12 Tribes of Israel at the foot of the mountain. Then Moses sent young men to make burnt offerings and peace offerings to YHVH whereupon he took the blood and sprinkled God’s altar before Moses read the Book of the Covenant. This is when all the people of Israel reaffirmed their vow: “All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient” (Exodus 24:7), followed by Moses sprinkled the blood on the people and said: “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words” (Exodus 24:8).
Once the blood covenant was established, Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and the 70 elders went up – ascended – the mountain of God where they saw that there was sapphire pavement under the God of Israel’s feet (Exo. 24:10). Today, if you have accepted Messiah Yeshua as your Lord and Savior, you can ascend rightly by the Blood of the once-for-all sacrifice: “Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus” (Heb. 10:19).
These 70 nobles, plus Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, not only saw God from afar, but they interacted with Him through eating and drinking at His Table (Exo. 24:11). Can you imagine eating and drinking with God? It must have been transforming.
We are told in Exodus 24:2 that Moses was the only one that could come near in this ascended place on God’s Holy Mountain, because he had a close and personal relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It’s interesting that the concept of a burnt offering includes both “going up” (olah) and “coming near” (qorban). Moses was able to perform a whole burnt offering while the 70 elders and the three leaders of Aaron’s high priestly clan could only experience half – only the olah part of the olah qorban.
“Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain. 16 Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel 8 So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights” (Exodus 24:15-18 NKJV).
Behold, 2024 is going to be a year when all the people will see the glory of the LORD come down. It will burn up His enemies and it will look like a consuming fire.
“The Lord reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of coastlands be glad! 2 Clouds and darkness surround Him; Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. 3 A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about. 4 His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. 6 The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory” (Psalms 97:1-6 NKJV).
