BUILDING A SUKKAH FOR SUKKOT

ree

For forty years, God’s people traversed the wilderness prior to entering the Holy Land, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Scripture tells us: “For a seven-day period you shall live in booths. Every resident among the Israelites shall live in booths, in order that your [ensuing] generations should know that I had the children of Israel live in booths when I took them out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord, your God” (Leviticus 23:42-43).

A sukkah is essentially an outdoor hut that is covered with vegetation, known as sechach. The word sukkah translates as “shelter” or “cover” or “booth,” and refers to the space where God’s people spend as much time as possible during Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles). Building a sukkah commemorates the Exodus through emphasizing their temporary dwelling places. Scripture tells His people to dwell in the sukkah so that “Your [ensuing] generations should know that I had the children of Israel live in shelters when I took them out of the land of Egypt” (Leviticus 23:43).

Sukkot starts at sunset tonight – October 6, 2025 – if you are using Google’s calendar that most of the Jewish people go by. It is celebrated in autumn when the final harvest is brought in. Fittingly, the sukkah in Biblical days was covered by organic material that grew from the ground, like discarded grape vines and wheat stalks. Today, people use evergreen boughs, cornstalks, palm fronds, bamboo, etc. The Hebrews have been taught that there must be more shade than sun in their sukkah. The ideal sukkah has four walls, but three or two walls can work as well.

The first night of Sukkot is unique in that even if the weather is lousy, everyone celebrating Tabernacles breaks bread in their sukkah. Depending on the weather, your Sukkot meal can either feel like a picnic or an extreme-weather adventure. During Sukkot, challah bread is first eaten dipped in honey, which is a departure from the Sabbath meal’s challah bread dipped in salt. After the breaking of the challah, the festive meal commences.

Before the delicious special Sukkot meal in the sukkah, the Hebrews bless God “Who sanctified us with His commandments, and instructed us to dwell in the sukkah.” The first night of Sukkot they also say the Shehecheyanu blessing, thanking God for having brought us to this occasion.

In the 4th century BCE, when Ezra led God’s people in Jerusalem to return to God’s ways articulated in the Bible, they all built a sukkah after they collected supplies from the hills of Jerusalem. In our day, it’s time to return to God’s Biblical ways. If you are able, or unable, to build a physical sukkah, always remember to build a dwelling place for God in your heart with a renewed sense of commitment, love, and joy. God is simply looking for you and I to sup with Him at His Sukkot Table. There is great grace in how we do it. Seek the Lord for what will please Him for you and your family.

Let’s build a joy-filled wonderful life together with our lovely Heavenly Father and our beautiful Lord and Savior Messiah Yeshua!

Happy Sukkot y’all!

Give em heaven!!
