FROM AT-ONE-MENT TO JOY

The sublime essence of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) can be summed up with the word “atonement,” which can be thought of as a day of at-one-ment. At the core of Yom Kippur lies the theme of “onement” and our being there in oneness with the LORD. Yeshua’s once-for-all atonement sacrifice opens the door for our at-onement relationship with God.
At-onement is when the inner soul of a human being below and the ultimate Essence of Being above forge a more intimate relationship through a higher degree of oneness, just like a good marriage grows with each passing year. This ever-deepening marital relationship is a face to face (panim el Panim) encounter. Know that one of the names of Yom Kippur is “The Day of Face to Face.”
Since the veil was torn in God’s Temple in Jerusalem after Yeshua’s crucifixion, all those who have received the most precious gift of the Lamb of God sacrifice have access to the other side of the veil. Before this time the High Priest had to go behind the veil of God’s Temple once a year, and the whole nation would hold its breath because their fate depended upon God accepting the sacrifice. At this point, the High Priest was “face to face” with the mercy seat of God, which can also be translated the seat of atonement:
Scripture tells us: “For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when THAT WHICH IS PERFECT IS COME, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then FACE TO FACE: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known” (1 Corinthians 13:9-12).
Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) was our perfect sacrifice that perfectly fulfilled every Biblical Feast, including the Day of Atonement. He is the Who was and who is and who is to come. He is “that which is perfect is come.” This means that the more we engage and invest in our most intimate relationship with Messiah Yeshua and our Heavenly Father, the more we shall know from His perspective, even to the utmost of knowing even as we are known.
There is so much joy to growing in knowing, as you are known. This is how I view the 5-day transition grace period from the Day of At-one-ment (Yom Kippur) to the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). It’s likened to a married couple building a life together, which takes a lot of hard work, forgiveness, and grace. The joy that comes from sticking it out through thick and thin is well worth it. Nothing truly valuable comes easy.
The Bible speaks about God and His people building an intimate life together, and it has to do with a bridal company of people: “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God” (Revelation 21:1-3).
Devout Jews have a tradition that those who are scrupulous begin to construct a sukkah (temporary dwelling place) immediately upon the conclusion of the Day of Atonement. It’s an earnest act of building a personal place for close proximity. This represents an intimate bond between Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Yom Kippur is not complete without the immediate engagement of erecting a personal dwelling place for God – a sukkah – and the opposite is true. Sukkot cannot properly commence unless it is closely linked to the immediate aftermath of Yom Kippur’s at-one-ment investment, which is how we build a good life together with God.
On Google’s Calendar (that most Jews go by), Sukkot starts tomorrow at sunset on Monday, October 6 and ends at nightfall on Monday, October 13, 2025. Which is directly followed by Shemini Atzeret (the 8th day of the Feast of Tabernacles) that begins at sunset on October 13th; and then, is immediately followed by Simchat Torah that begins at sunset on October 14th and ends after nightfall on October 15, 2025.
Here's to building a joy-filled and wonderful life together with our lovely Heavenly Father and our beautiful Lord and Savior Messiah Yeshua!
Give em heaven!!
